The proliferation of invasive plant species poses a significant threat to ecosystems worldwide. These plants, introduced to non-native environments, can outcompete native species, disrupt natural habitats, and alter ecosystem functions. Effective management strategies are imperative to mitigate these impacts.

Yes. When used properly and in conjunction with other methods of control (e.g. cutting) herbicides can play a crucial role in the management of invasive plant species. Firstly, they offer a targeted and efficient means of controlling invasive plants, minimizing damage to surrounding native vegetation. Additionally, herbicides are often more cost-effective and labor-efficient compared to manual or mechanical methods of control, especially in large-scale infestations. When used judiciously and in accordance with best management practices and within the proper legal framework, herbicides can be a valuable tool in the broader strategy of invasive species management, contributing to the long-term preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem health.
We completely understand apprehension regarding herbicide use, and will gladly answer any questions you may have. Basswood selects only those herbicides that are among the safer alternatives on the market, all of which break down rapidly in the environment. Herbicides are a poison and deserve to be respected as such, however we ensure that any exposure is eliminated by restricting access to the site, applying with only hand-powered equipment, and ensuring that applications are made during appropriate weather conditions to eliminate drift.
We use just about every method at our disposal to address the conditions on site, which often begins with the mechanical removal of the offending vegetation. Invasive plants, by their nature, are extremely difficult to control. Mature infestations can take multiple years of treatments, even with herbicides, to achieve control over a site. A common goal of a treatment program is to reduce the infestation to a level that the individual property owner can manage without chemicals. This reduction is possible without herbicides in small infestations and select sites, but is typically impractical for large populations. An on-site consultation would be needed to determine the appropriate plan of action.
